Independence
There is no single definition of independence. For one person it means staying in the home they love. For another it means freedom to travel, time with friends, meaningful work, or fewer responsibilities.
How can I maintain independence as I get older?
Independence is preserved by systems: routines you keep, a home that is easy to run, more than one way to get around, relationships you invest in, and a written backup plan.
Each of those is easier to build while everything is going well. Built early, they rarely feel like accommodations. Built late, they can feel like concessions.
Reducing administrative load matters as much as anything physical. Hours spent managing a household are hours not spent on the life the household exists to support.
Does accepting help reduce independence?
Delegating logistics generally increases independence, because it returns time and attention to the things you actually want to decide about.
Most accomplished people already delegate in their professional lives without considering it a loss of autonomy. The same logic applies at home.
